Netgear announced the Orbi WiFi system designed to eliminate dead spots in smart homes. It is similar to using a network extender, but Netgear has improved this approach with dedicated band of communication with satellite devices. Orbit WiFi system consists of one router and one satellite which can cover a home up to 4,000 square feet area.
Orbi system initially will be available in September for US$400.The future plan of Netgear include offering kits with more satellites for larger homes with each satellite providing coverage up to 2,000 square feet. Orbi is a part of new wave of WiFi system that tackles range and installation problems.
Orbi system comes with backhaul quad stream 1.Gbps 5-GHz band for connecting router and satellites. For the entire network it has single WiFi network name or SSID which covers 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi bands. Orbi WiFi offers 802.11ac AC3000 WiFi speeds of up to 3Gbps. The satellite and router both have four Gigabit Ethernet ports and one USB 2.0 port.
The Orbi system has IPv6, port forwarding, dynamic DNS, parental control and access point mode. According to Netgear, Orbi is the only system to leverage Tri-band WiFi.
